Food Shops
Payhembury Provisions (10 mins walk): little village store with essentials. At the weekends they sell freshly baked pastries but they can sell out fast.
Fordmore Farm Shop and Café, Cullompton (10 mins drive): high quality farm shop with excellent butchery counter and a café offering outdoor and takeaway food.
Greendale Farm, Exeter (20 mins): lovely farm shop selling great fish, meat and other fresh produce. The farm has a big array of animals on-site for the kids to say hello to and also a little café selling cakes and hot food.
Darts Farm, Exmouth (20 mins): Devon’s version of Whole Foods. A large upmarket farm shop with an excellent meat and deli counter. Also have a very good children’s toy section and a brilliant takeaway fish stall outside. They have a little outdoor adventure playground for the little ones too.
Beer Fisheries, Beer (20 mins): excellent fishmonger located just at the top of Beer beach.

The Six Bells, Payhembury (5 mins walk): Our closest pub in the village which is great for a pint after a nearby walk.
The Drewe Arms, Broadhembury (5 mins drive): Our favourite and prettiest local pub with lovely beer garden.
The Masons Arms, Branscombe (20 mins): another gorgeous spot which is perfect for a pint after a lazy day spent on Branscombe beach.
Restaurants
The Pig Hotel, Combe (15 mins): popular hotel with a very good restaurant and potting shed treatment rooms which offer a small selection of beauty treatments. Perfect for a lovely day out. Booking recommended.
Coldharbour Field Kitchen (15 mins): lovely field kitchen of local produce – their Dexter beef burgers are sensational. Large outdoor terrace to enjoy lunch in the sunshine.
Glebe House, Colyton (25 mins): boutique guesthouse with excellent food offering as a set menu which changes daily. You feel as if you’re dining in someone’s living room. Booking essential as its quite a small place.
The Lost Kitchen, Tiverton (35 mins): really excellent spot with gorgeous views and a beautiful outdoor terrace serving local fish, meats and wood fired pizzas. Also really reasonably priced and good for little ones.
Rockfish, Exmouth (25 mins): great spot for some tasty fish if you’re planning a visit to Exmouth beach. There is another site on the quay in Exeter if you can’t get a booking here.
River Exe Café, Exmouth (25 mins): great food offering in a beautiful setting.
Takeaway Options
Jeffries Eatery, Ottery St Mary (10 mins): great curry house who will deliver to Glebe Farm for large orders.
The Proper Fish & Chip Co, Honiton (10 mins): best fish and chips locally.
Pizza Time, Feniton (5 mins): closest takeaway pizza place and if you tell them you're ordering for a big group, they can deliver.
Great For Kids
There is a little children’s playground in Payhembury which you can walk to. Turn right out of our drive and head into the village and it’s just to the right of the church.
Escot Estate: Wildwood Escot (7 mins): animal park with wolf enclosure, zip line, Saxon village and maze. They also offer clay pigeon shooting.
Bear Town, Cullompton (15 mins): a great immersive role play centre for little ones ages 7 and under complete with little supermarket, police station, vets and fire station. We find it’s the best place to keep our little one entertained!
iBounce, Exeter (20 mins): trampolining centre with a large foam pit and indoor play centre. Great way for the little ones to burn some energy. There's also a soft play centre here too.
Quad World, Exeter (20 mins): quad bike racetrack.
Crealy Theme Park (20 mins): award winning family theme park with over 60 rides and plenty of activities, as well as a zoo.
Alpaca Trekking at Bearhouse Alpacas, Sidbury (20 mins): working alpaca stud farm where you can walk with them around the bridleways of the farm. Also has angora goats, horses, ducks and geese.
Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth (20 mins). Family run sanctuary where you can pet the animals.
Pennywell Farm, Buckfastleigh (45 mins): big farm with lots of activities and rides to keep the little ones happy. Highlights include miniature pigs which you can cuddle, lamb feeding and ferret racing. There are also tractor and trailor rides, a railway and rabbit go-carts.
Other Activities
Landrover Experience, Honiton (10 mins): test driving off road with Landrover at their West Country branch. Bookings recommended.
Honiton Pottery Workshop (10 mins): pottery studio with a “paint your own” offering. Great way to keep the kids (and adults!) busy on a rainy day.
Blackbury Honey Farm, Colyton (20 mins): local honey farm with little tearoom. Also offers tours and bee keeping lessons.
Beer Boat Rental (20 mins): Simon runs Beer Self Drive Motor Boats if you want to rent a boat for the day and explore the East Devon coastline. His number is 07773 923130.
Devon & Somerset Gliding, Dunkerswell (10 mins): an amazing thing to do if you want to see the beauty of East Devon from the skies. They offer trial lessons with seasoned pros.
Sandford Orchard (35 mins): working cider farm that also offer tours.
Castlewood Vineyard, Axminster (40 mins): boutique vineyard with excellent wines and also a great annual festival.
Harry May’s Mackerel Fishing and Deep Sea Fishing, Lyme Regis (45 mins): you can join one of the charters and spend the day fishing. Booking recommended.
Beaches & Wild Swimming
Beer (20 mins): a picturesque little village selling wonderful fresh fish. You can also get good crab sandwiches or fish and chips at the beach here.
Branscombe (20 mins): larger local pebble beach with a cafe and excellent cliff walks.
Budleigh Salterton (20 mins): great walks along the coast and there’s also a new Rockfish restaurant which has just opened.
Spitchwick (45 mins): our best secret wild swimming spot in Dartmoor which is just gorgeous on a sunny day. It’s even pretty magic in the pouring rain.
Favourite Walks
There’s an easy 5k circular loop just out of our house if you turn left on the footpath across the road which takes you around the local farms and ends at The Six Bells pub. You may want wellies if it’s wet.
Hembury Fort: a local walk with a gorgeous view over Devon and Dartmoor.
Ottery St Mary Woodland: really beautiful circular around the forest.
Beer to Branscombe: 4.3km along the coast between two beautiful beaches. Views are spectacular come rain or shine. You can either catch a bus back to Beer again, or after stopping for a pint at The Masons Arms, walk back again.
Killerton House National Trust site with beautiful gardens.
Dartmoor National Park: anywhere here is pretty spectacular.
